Understated elegance, so Chanel-like in its classic chic! The jacket has the short somewhat boxy silhouette typical for the late 1950s and early 1960s. It's styled with princess seaming, notched lapels and 3/4 length sleeves.Cleverly placed small hand warmer pockets are positioned at the bottom edge of the jacket, seamed in such a way as to blend into the shaping seams. The collar, lapels, front plackets and pocket tops are bound in silky black braid.

FABRIC/COLORS: The fabric is black, rather crisp and tightly woven with good body - the jacket is so well made that there's nowhere to snip fabric from for a fiber burn test, but based on look and feel and awareness of typical Handmacher quality, I'm going to guess a silk/wool blend. This might fall into the category of bombazine. The jacket is fully lined in a lightweight faille that feels like silk.

TAGS: Tailored by Handmacher. The jacket also has the union label used between 1955 and 1963. Handmacher suits were well known in the 1950s and early 60s for their fabulous quality and attention to detail.

CLOSURES: Three large black plastic buttons with bound buttonholes.

CONDITION: No stains, holes, tears or other issues seen.

I measure the outside of garments, unless stated otherwise.

For menswear, the chest is measured at armpit level.

For womenswear, the bust is measured a little below armpit level, including the room created by darts or gathers.

Waist will be measured if there is one, and hips are measured about 9" below waist level. Sleeves are measured from shoulder seam or an approximation in the absence of a shoulder seam. Garment length is measured from the back of the neck, unless otherwise stated.

The measurement numbers refer to the garment, not the body inside. For best fit, measure a similar type of garment which fits you well and compare.

If the garment is shown on Josephine, my mannequin, her measurements are 31/24.5/34". Sometimes she wears a padded bra. My live models measurements vary depending on the day and year, and I don't ask them to share that.
