This is a 1960s version of the classic Norfolk jacket, worn by gentlemen for sport, travel, and country living since the late 1800s. The original Norfolks had box pleats front and back, along with a belt or half belt. This version has sewn down "straps" instead of pleats. There is a sewn in half-belt in back, as well as an optional belt that can be added to pull in the waist a bit in front or left off completely. It also has the typical flap handwarmer patch pockets, and a back vent. There is light padding in the shoulder. The jacket is partially lined.

SIZE: No size label

 Measurements Inches Cm
Chest 45" 114.25
Shoulders 18" 45.5
Waist 42" 106.5
Length from back of neck 30.5" 77.5
Sleeve length 24" 61

FABRIC/COLORS: Black & light gray tweed with occasional flecks of blue and red. I believe it is wool, based on a fiber burn test. The lining is an acetate type fabric, muted green with a novelty print depicting equestrian/hunting motifs.

TAGS: The Hitchin' Post. The union tag inside the inner pocket was used between 1962 and 1976.

CLOSURES: The jacket closes with three black plastic buttons that are embossed to suggest the classic leather stitched buttons of an older coat. Two of the same buttons anchor the half-belt in back, and another two close the removable belt in front. Smaller matching buttons are used on each cuff.

CONDITION: There is a fairly subtle brownish stain, about 1" in diameter on the left lower front of the jacket- see close-up. I don't have a trustworthy dry cleaner here, so tried spot cleaning without much success. Lining is dingy in spots, not see when worn of course, and should also respond to dry cleaning.

I measure the outside of garments, unless stated otherwise.

For menswear, the chest is measured at armpit level.

For womenswear, the bust is measured a little below armpit level, including the room created by darts or gathers.

Waist will be measured if there is one, and hips are measured about 9" below waist level. Sleeves are measured from shoulder seam or an approximation in the absence of a shoulder seam. Garment length is measured from the back of the neck, unless otherwise stated.

The measurement numbers refer to the garment, not the body inside. For best fit, measure a similar type of garment which fits you well and compare.

If the garment is shown on Josephine, my mannequin, her measurements are 31/24.5/34". Sometimes she wears a padded bra. My live models measurements vary depending on the day and year, and I don't ask them to share that.
