50s Swing Jacket Women's Vintage Windowpane Plaid M/L VFG Wm Block
This vintage early 50s swing jacket is just swellegant! The bold windowpane plaid is set off by the solid color notched shawl collar and inner cuffs that can be cuffed for contrast if desired. Shoulders are lightly padded, and there are vertical bound hand warmer pockets. The jacket is fully lined.
SIZE: No size label. Measurements were taken with the jacket laying flat, from side seam to side seam. There was about 3" overlap of the front edges in this position.
Measurements | Inches | Cm |
Bust | 47" | 119.5 |
Shoulders | 17" | 43 |
Bottom edge circumference | 56" | 142 |
Length | 30.25" | 76.75 |
Sleeve length | 25" | 63.5 |
FABRIC/COLORS: Beautiful wool suiting fabric. The underlying warm-toned taupe is a gabardine weave, with a woven-in windowpane plaid done in a more substantial slubbed boucle that "pops" visually and texturally. The collar, placket facing, and inner cuff are a solid version of the taupe. The jacket is lined in a gorgeous silky slubbed taupe.
TAGS: The only tag in the coat is from The Wm. H. Block Co., Indianapolis. Block's was a high end department store that was founded in 1896 and remained quite popular through the 1950s, eventually merging with other companies and closing in 1987. However, I was lucky enough to find a Vogue magazine ad for Swansdown from January 1953, showing Suzy Parker wearing this same jacket, alongside Dovima and Jean Patchett (thank you to Jean Patchett-dot-com which seems to be the original source). CLOSURES: N/A, this is a clutch style coat that is designed without fasteners.
CONDITION: No stains, holes, tears or other issues noted.
I measure the outside of garments, unless stated otherwise.
For menswear, the chest is measured at armpit level.
For womenswear, the bust is measured a little below armpit level, including the room created by darts or gathers.
Waist will be measured if there is one, and hips are measured about 9" below waist level. Sleeves are measured from shoulder seam or an approximation in the absence of a shoulder seam. Garment length is measured from the back of the neck, unless otherwise stated.
The measurement numbers refer to the garment, not the body inside. For best fit, measure a similar type of garment which fits you well and compare.
If the garment is shown on Josephine, my mannequin, her measurements are 31/24.5/34". Sometimes she wears a padded bra. My live models measurements vary depending on the day and year, and I don't ask them to share that.
