30s Bias Cut Halter Neck Slip Dress As-Is Small Peach VFG
his is the first 1930s halter neck slip I have ever encountered in decades of collecting. It is damaged, but also very beautiful, so I am offering it As-Is at a friendly price. The seaming is unusual, and worthy of study or patterning. The front is all one piece of fabric except for the bias cut angles that begin below the knee. The back bodice is also part of the same piece of fabric that forms the entire front, joining at center back. The only "waist" seam is in back. The slip has a v-neck, and a lower back. There is a narrow strap that goes around the neck - it has a small snap inside the center of the strap in back - not sure what the intended use was.
SIZE: No size label. Being bias cut means that measurements are somewhat fluid on the body.
| Measurements | Inches | Cm |
| Estimated bust laying flat | 30" | 76 |
| Waist | 30" | 76 |
| Hips | 37" | 94 |
| Sweep | 64" | 162 |
| Length from center of vee-front | 78" | 198 |
FABRIC/COLORS: Pale peach, probably silk but could be rayon. It's a plain weave, light to medium weight and a little crisp. The fabric used for the halter strap is softer and lighter.
TAGS: No tags
CLOSURES: N/A, this pulls on over the head.
CONDITION: There are a few areas of fabric deterioration, the largest being at the right bodice where the strap inserts and at the neckline - see closeup. There are smaller areas of fabric breakdown at the seamed angles near the waist along the side seams - see closeup on the left, which is larger than right. There is also a bit of deterioration to the halter strap at the center back - see closeup. The fabric on most of the slip seems strong. No stains noted.
I measure the outside of garments, unless stated otherwise.
For menswear, the chest is measured at armpit level.
For womenswear, the bust is measured a little below armpit level, including the room created by darts or gathers.
Waist will be measured if there is one, and hips are measured about 9" below waist level. Sleeves are measured from shoulder seam or an approximation in the absence of a shoulder seam. Garment length is measured from the back of the neck, unless otherwise stated.
The measurement numbers refer to the garment, not the body inside. For best fit, measure a similar type of garment which fits you well and compare.
If the garment is shown on Josephine, my mannequin, her measurements are 31/24.5/34". Sometimes she wears a padded bra. My live models measurements vary depending on the day and year, and I don't ask them to share that.
